Crisis Communications in Africa: What to Do in the First 24 Hours

PR and communication agency in africa

The first day of a crisis decides more than people think. Not because you’ll have all the facts by then, you rarely will, but because the silence or the scramble in those first hours sets the tone the media, the public, and your own staff will remember long after the incident itself is resolved.

Start with a single source of truth. The most common mistake we see isn’t a bad statement, it’s multiple people saying slightly different things because nobody agreed on the facts before anyone spoke. Get your leadership, legal, and communications people in one room and agree on what you know, what you don’t know yet, and what you can say publicly right now. That takes an hour. Skipping it costs weeks.

Acknowledge fast, even without full information. “We are aware of the situation and are gathering facts, we will update within (timeframe)” is a complete, honest, defensible statement. What kills brands isn’t admitting they don’t have all the answers yet, it’s going quiet while the story runs without them.

Know who you’re actually talking to. In many African markets, the audience that matters first isn’t international media, it’s the two or three national outlets and the WhatsApp and X conversation that will shape the story locally before it goes anywhere else.

Watch the regulatory layer. A crisis involving safety, health, or finance may trigger a legal obligation to notify a specific ministry or regulator. Have a list, made in advance, of who needs official notice.

Brief your own staff before the public. Employees who hear about a crisis from the news become your least controllable source of leaks and speculation.

Finally, resist the urge to over-explain. A defensive, lengthy statement reads as guilt even when the brand did nothing wrong. Say what you know, say what you’re doing about it, say when you’ll update again, and stop.
